If you are ever in the market for a used laptop you are probably in for a lot of digging to find that great deal. Just like a used car there is so much going on that the eye cant see in one short test. Whenever you buy a used laptop try to find a seller that gives you a modest return policy – a week to a month should be fine.

Either way, there are things that SHOULD come with every used laptop – know before you buy and avoid the scams and rip offs.

If the laptop comes with the old users data on it – that’s a bad sign. I can understand a hand me down might not come clean but any private seller or a retail shop selling used custom configurations should be cleaning the disk before the sale. Honestly if a laptop ever came into my hands with the previous owners data on it – I’d tell them and then wipe it for them out of courtesy for their privacy.

Recovery Disc

Make sure that your laptop comes with recovery software.

Check the bottom of the laptop for a Windows sticker with a license key on it. As long as you have a license you don’t need the original CD to install windows. However, for those who are not sure how / where to download Windows OS disc images it is really convenient to have a recovery disc included with your laptop.

If you don’t have one you can either have a local computer repair shop create you one or burn your own. Careful though, you don’t want to mess up your recovery disc because when it comes time to use it you probably wont have another fail safe.

One of the trickiest forms of Laptop Repair is LCD replacement. The LCD (liquid crystal display) screen is a delicate component, and the display often contains the Wi-Fi antenna and a webcam. Sometimes the LCD is clearly cracked, is very dim, flickering, splotchy and sometimes it simply won’t turn on.

When your laptop LCD is suffering from any of these symptoms take a deep breath and ask the following questions:

LCD in need of Replacement
LCD in need of Replacement
  • Does the laptop still turn on?
  • If so, does the display light up at all - even if there is nothing being displayed?
  • Is there damage to the bezel or is it just the LCD itself?
  • Perhaps most importantly - does it work when connected to an external monitor?

At our Boston Laptop Repair shop we take in your laptop computer with LCD damage for a diagnostic session that can last from a few minutes to a day depending on the extent of the damage and the complexity of the hardware.

When we figure out what its going to take to restore the laptop to its original quality we give our customers a quote and let them decide how to proceed with the repair.

Even if your LCD is partially functioning, or works with an external monitor plugged in, take it to a local laptop repair shop or feel free to walk into our Boston laptop repair shop when we’re open. Using a damaged machine can actually cause more harm than the incident that broke it in the first place.

A vital step in Laptop Repair concerning Data Recovery, Migration or Maintenance is having a solution in place before a critical situation arises. At our Boston Computer Repair shop we have all the tools and experience to recover your important data from a failed hard drive or crashed system in most cases. However, for the inevitable times where a hard drive has catastrophically failed and Data Recovery is impossible it is vital to have a secure backup solution in place.

Your Data is Irreplacable

Your Data is Irreplaceable

There are many reliable data backup solutions on the market for Desktop and Laptop PC users, as well as more complex data maintenance systems for enterprise level customers using server racks or computer-farms.

I personally use and recommend an external hard drive of at least 1 Terabyte configured to automatically back up your entire system. It is important to make sure your Laptop Hard Drive is large enough to store all of your files without spilling over onto the external - as the essence of backup is to keep two complete and separate copies of everything in case one of the drives fails.

For most users this one hardware and software solution will be everything you need to secure your data and prepare to migrate to a new system in the event of an upgrade or a crash. However, there are a number of other ways to back up your data in case you need to have it on-the-go or access it over the internet. In another post I will review flash-based storage, cloud-based storage and RAID backup solutions for businesses.

A Lenovo laptop repair that recently came through our Boston computer repair shop had a “no power to laptop” issue as it would not take a charge from the power cable.  After first ruling out that the power cable and A/C Adapter (these are the two cables that run from a laptop to the electrical outlet) are not faulty, we

then inspected the connection from the A/C adapter cable to the actual laptop and noticed a slightly loose connection with the DC jack (the internal component that you plug the A/C Adapter power cable into on a laptop).  The suspected resolution was a DC jack repair where we would re-solder the jack onto the motherboard or to purchase a new laptop jack cord, depending on what type of DC jack the laptop had beneath its cover and the damage to the actual jack and possibly even to the motherboard.  However, if re-soldering or buying a DJ jack cord did not fix the issue, then there may have been a short circuit on the motherboard itself which means the motherboard would have to be replaced.  Therefore, the laptop was taken in for a diagnostic.

After carefully taking apart the Lenovo and inspecting the DJ jack cord that it encapsulated, a multi-meter was used to measure the voltages at each end to ensure proper connection, which indeed revealed a grounded wire as the issue.  Fortunately, instead of purchasing a new DJ jack cord, a re-soldering of the cord onto the plug fixed the issue.  After notifying the customer, this task was completed and the laptop was powering on. Computer repair problem resolved within 24 hours – nice!!
