Tip #1: Refrain from letting your toddler eat cereal next to your laptop.

Tip #1: Refrain from letting your toddler eat cereal next to your laptop.

To extend the life of your laptop computer or desktop computer, follow these computer maintenance tips from A+ Mobile PC Doctors, the most trusted computer repair company in Boston.

  • To cut down on temperature changes and dust affecting your computer, create a “summer home” for your laptop or desktop that is away from open windows and air vents. Especially now that it is getting warmer, a combination of hot outdoor air, frigid air conditioning, and airborne dust and particles can really mess with your hardware.
  • Uninstall programs that you’re not using instead of just deleting them. This will free up space and will prevent errors from improperly trashing the programs.
  • Reboot. Can you remember the last time you shut down and restarted? Rebooting will reset the RAM and make your computer run faster.
  • Clear your web history to free up memory.

For Boston computer repair services, A+ Mobile PC Doctors is conveniently located at 316 Newbury Street, #21. We are one of the few Boston computer repair companies that offer onsite computer repair in Boston — we come to you.

Information has now been released that a hacker used malware techniques to steal thousands of Facebook accounts in February, then selling them in bulk on the black market. Verisign’s iDefense director announced that the act is one of many that are taking place across the US. Individuals steal log-in data for Facebook accounts by using malware techniques that track computer keystrokes, and phishing techniques that make Facebook users think they are logging in on an actual Facebook website that is a convincing fake.

World Domination via Facebook Malware

World Domination via Facebook Malware

The crime is only the first step in a master plan of social network domination. The stolen Facebook accounts can be used to send fraudulent messages to the user’s friends, spread harmful links, and view sensitive information such as birthdates and home addresses which can be used toward identity theft. Thus, if you are linked to any of the thousands of accounts that were stolen, you may be at risk.

To battle malware attacks on your laptop computer or desktop computer, you should have an updated version of a good anti-virus and anti-spyware program. Anti-spyware software is not necessarily invincible, so if you end up in the market for a computer repair company, call A+ Mobile PC Doctors, the experts in Boston computer repair, at 1-617-723-1986. Our insured technicians offer onsite computer repair and remote desktop PC repair services, virus removal, spyware removal, and more — see our website for a full list of computer repair services.

Apple has a new iPhone repair policy which just landed them a lawsuit filed by an angry, mistreated California customer. The new policy requires Apple employees to deny warranty coverage to any iPhone whose watermark (Liquid Submersion Indicator, or LSI) has turned from white to red. Which doesn’t sound completely unreasonable until you discover that the two LSI’s can be activated by cold weather, humidity, a bead of sweat, or a drip of condensation from a nearby glass. There are two external LSI’s located on the headphone port and on the dock connector.

The new policy applies to the one-year warranty offered automatically within the purchase price of an Apple iPhone and to the AppleCare Protection Plan, an extended two-year warranty. Under both warranties, a customer may bring his defective phone to an Apple store and have it repaired, replaced, or refunded free of charge. Lack of coverage for liquid damage on ANY of Apple’s products is nothing new — but the new policy of actively denying a shred of help to customers and their products that have alleged water damage is something new.

As the Consumer Affairs website states, “The suit alleges, among other things, breach of warranty, fraud, unjust enrichment, and violations of the Song-Beverly Consumer Warranty Act.”

I think most people would agree with me when I say that Apple has terrible customer service, and a new policy to match. I have been an Apple customer since 2005, when I purchased an iBook laptop that came with an iPod. I was even sucked into the AppleCare Protection Plan for my laptop, the value of which I’m STILL not sure about. I gave up on Apple computer products after replacing my power adaptor twice because of its bad design. I own an iPhone (and I am currently on the lookout for anyone who can offer me a bubble for my iPhone that will still somehow allow me to make calls, play with apps, and listen to music. )

My best advice for dealing with Apple’s new policy is to first take your iPhone to a reputable computer repair company such as A+ Mobile PC Doctors for a preliminary opinion. The technicians will examine your iPhone, externally and internally, for any sign of water damage. If there is no water damage, you can then bring your iPhone to an Apple store and pray that they’ll take pity on your damaged goods by replacing your phone. The WORST thing you could do is to blindly bring in your iPhone to the Apple store and solely rely on their opinion. From reading forums on the Internet to hearing about my friend’s recent experience dealing with Apple customer service over a supposedly water-damaged iPhone (strikingly similar to the lawsuit situation), they will try to take advantage of you.

You’re in your basement, it’s two in the morning, and your wireless DIES right in the middle of a great hand of online poker. You curse your feeble wireless router’s inability to extend beyond the first floor of your home. Why, God, WHY?!

Signal strength on different brands of wireless routers can vary. Yet, no wireless router is perfect. Linksys and other brands of wireless routers come with default software that sometimes just don’t cut it. Here are a few things that you can do to extend your WiFi signal.

  • Install open-source firmware called Tbor 15C, which will allow you to boost your wireless signal power from a default of 50% to 100%.
  • Buy an antenna kit for your wireless router.
  • Buy a Hi-Gain USB Wireless-G Adaptor (above), which will extend your wireless reach by 300%. Aim it in any direction and get farther reach with your signal. This is helpful if you’re trying to get access from one building to another. Plugs into your USB.

For help in setting up a wireless connection at home or at work, A+ Mobile PC Doctors is the most efficient of all Boston computer repair companies. We offer only the most professional, reliable in-home computer networking and commercial wireless networking services. Our certified onsite technicians are fully qualified and insured to resolve any computer repair issue.
