We recently touched base with Steve, our Minneapolis Minnesota computer repair technician. He explained a tough PC repair problem that he had solved earlier this month.
For this past week, one job that was the most strenuous consisted of a monstrous desktop PC that would not allow the end user to get past its logon screen. After some analysis, we found that the operating system configuration was corrupted due to an entanglement of old technology with software updates, requiring troubleshooting. But because the issue was tied into the core software and main hardware, it took twice the effort to resolve the issue. However, our efforts weren’t in vain — we were eventually able to get the PC back in gear.
Besides this, a number of jobs required a variety of needs. For one, drilling out stripped screws; another, isolating a laptop’s LCD failure due to a defective motherboard. For the latter, it was not an easy shot at first glance as it took some time to isolate the common causes, but after ruling out particular instances where the software was confirmed to be correctly installed, the hardware persisted to be otherwise.

As a PC-to-Mac convert, I have nothing against Apple computers in general. I love how easy it is to find my files, I love how pretty Tiger is to look at, and I love iPhoto and iMovie. My past gripe was that Apple computers are ridiculously overpriced — which is now a bit out of date due to the company’s more recent recession-proof pricing.

The one complaint that I still have about Apple is its terrible customer service and repair system. They overcharge, they make you wait, and, let’s be honest, who really wants to lug their broken laptop into the mall on a busy Saturday afternoon? What really angers me is that they overcharge because they CAN.
In a recent article, Gizmodo.com points out that high fees are the LEAST of the company’s vices. Turns out, I’m not the only one to have experienced the fine print of the Apple Care warranty, extra-long waiting periods, and overall crappy customer service.

Once upon a time, I considered myself the classic PC-to-Mac convert. I somehow convinced my longtime PC-user of a father to buy me a glossy new Apple iBook for my first year of college. Aside from the usual file mis-conversion frustrations, there were no real hardware problems the first year I had my laptop. The real trouble came about 2 years down the line.

Apple laptop repair
The DC jack and plug were apparently having some domestic disputes, and after a few months of having to perch my laptop and its plug on a set of phone books just to attain the green light of power charge, the computer finally went dead on me. It was then that I found out that the Apple “insurance” that my father paid over $200 for when he bought the computer was pretty much useless in regards to hardware issues. I also learned of Apple’s dirty habit of over-charging its customers (in this case, they wanted to charge over $80 for a part that costs about $7).
I was fortunate enough to have a tech-savvy friend who offered to repair the laptop for the price of the part. What most people don’t know is that there is no mystical genie granting power only to Apple to repair its own computers. If you’re in need of computer repair for a Mac laptop or desktop computer, most computer repair shops can do the job, though not all are created equal.
